The railway between Basingstoke and Southampton has been reopened after being blocked following a "police incident".

South Western Railway tweeted to say that all lines were cleared at around 7:30pm.

The incident was first reported at around 6pm, with the lines towards Southampton expected to be blocked until 8pm. This was subsequently revised to around 9pm

A passenger on a train stopped outside Eastleigh has said that the incident was as the result of a concern for welfare.

South Western Railway said: "We have been informed of police dealing with an incident between Basingstoke and Southampton. This means that all lines are currently blocked in the Southampton direction.
"To assist you with your journey your ticket will be accepted, at no extra cost to yourself, on the following services:
- Bluestar buses on routes 2 & 3
- Xelabus on routes X6, X7 and X15
- Bluestar buses UNILINK U1C
"For further information or onward travel advice please speak to a member of staff or use a station help point.
"We are very sorry for any delay that this may cause to your journey."

Hampshire Constabulary were contacted for comment.
