Three schools in the Basingstoke area have full or partial closures in place this morning after cold weather overnight.

Fairfields School, on Council Road, is fully closed today after its boilers failed overnight and temperatures in the classrooms at a chilly ten degrees.

A message sent out from the school reads: "Unfortunately our boilers have failed and we are unable to heat the school.

"The temperature in the classrooms is 10 degrees and so I am going to have to close the school until the problem is resolved.

"The engineers have been called and I will keep you updated.

"We will Zoom as normal for the children but please do not feel under pressure to attend these if you have not got access to a device."

Elsewhere in Basingstoke, Castle Hill Pre-School in Kenilworth Road will open at 10am.

This is to "allow staff to travel to work safely, defrost all the locks to get onsite, and then clear and grit the pathways once again to make it safe for parents and children".

The school adds: "Parents/carers must park offsite and enter the site on foot through the top pedestrian gate behind the portacabin.

"Please ensure your children stay on the gritted pathways, and be aware that you enter the site at your own risk.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused but safety is our main priority."

Additionally, the Year R critical worker bubble at Charles Kingsley's C of E Primary School in Eversley is closed after a heating failure.

Schools are currently closed to most pupils under the coronavirus lockdown restrictions, with most lessons taking place online.

However, they have been opening in person for the children of key workers and the most vulnerable pupils.

Temperatures in Basingstoke this morning are forecast to rise no higher than 0 degrees today as the UK deals with Beast from the East 2.

However, when wind chill is factored in, that is likely to feel like -6 or -7 Celsius.
