AS A cold snap hits Basingstoke we have seen flurries of snow settling on walls gardens and our roof tops.

But if the snow on your roof is melting faster than your neighbours, it could be a sign of poor insulation, and it can cost you a fortune.

A light dusting of snow can tell you a lot about the efficiency of your home and fast melting snow on the roof can be a symptom of inadequate insulation or poor air sealing.

You should think about the roof of your home like the top of your head- when its cold you wear a hat- and loft insulation does the same job for your house.

Around a quarter of a home's heat is lost through poorly insulated roof spaces, so it’s worth checking your loft insulation as you could save your self money in the long run.

We spoke to Tom Partridge who works at HomeSmart Installations in Hampshire who told us: “If your roof is nice and bright white with snow cover then good news your insulation is doing a great job, if however your snow is melting faster or is possibly already gone then you are loosing a huge amount of heat and money needlessly.”

But fear not if your roof is showing signs of poor insulation because there is an easy way to fix it.

Tom continued: “If snow on your roof seems to be melting quickly it may be a good idea to have a quote for soft set, breathable, open cell sprayfoam loft insulation.  After having sprayfoam insulation installed you can expect to see about a 30 per cent reduction in spend on heating. Not only does spray foam insulation save you money in the long term with heating costs it also saves you money in loft matinence as your roof timbers won’t get rotten."
