POTHOLES have long been one of the biggest bugbears for Basingstoke residents.

We have all felt the sickening thump after hitting a hole in the road, but some residents experience this every day- and they are fed up.

Sharing locations of some of the worst streets for potholes, some major routes were flagged up by Gazette readers.

Do you recognise any of these hotspots?

A339

This road was mentioned repeatedly by readers and came top of the list for the worst potholes in the borough.

Steve Snarey said: “Some new ones on the A339 about a mile outside on approach to Basingstoke from Newbury. They are the worst I’ve seen!”

Stewart Cuthill has had to fork out hundreds of pounds after his car was damdged on this road. He wrote: “This happened to my wheel on Monday evening on the A339, just before the big layby. Scared the life out of me, must be pretty deep, it's knackered my wheel. Audi want £895 for a new wheel!”

Thomas Stephens also noted the huge holes in the road: “Right now there two giant CRATERS on the A339 in Basingstoke direction on the hill where the speed cameras used to be before the stone works.”

Another resident, Tim O'Gara, also commented on the size of the potholes: “There's some absolute whoppers on the A339 between the Roman Road roundabout and the hill with the crawler lane.”

Annmarie Sarah Finn is worried the potholes will cause an accident: “The a339 from Kingsclere to Basingstoke is awful and going to cause and accident soon!”

Eileen Mills added: “A339 Newbury to Basingstoke yesterday, very bad, lots filled with water, couldn’t tell how deep. Nightmare.”

West Ham industrial estate

Coming in close second place was West Ham industrial estate, particularly Grafton Way, with several users mentioning the cordoned off pothole.

Tom Lennon and Sharon Frewer both picked out West Ham industrial estate with Mr Lennon stating that one pothole has had a barricade around it for over a year and a half.

Sarah Leach added: “The one on Grafton way that was repaired once but came back almost straight away and now it's been cordoned off for so long it actually shows on goggle maps!”

Vicky Edwards said she has reported the pothole several times but ‘nobody takes any notice’.

Old Worting Road

Old Worting Road by the Salisbury Gardens junction was also flagged up by some readers.

Martin Littleboy joked: “Old Worting Road at the junction with Salisbury Gardens. I reckon you could lose cyclists down it!”

Queen Mary Avenue

Queen Mary Avenue near Houndmills roundabout was branded ‘awful by

Rich JB. Kay Baker agreed stating there are ‘loads’ that are big in size.

A340

Dave J B Bell said: “A340 has a really nasty one that can’t be avoided just before the hospital traffic lights when coming from Tadley.”

Kempshott Lane

Anthony David Chandler mentioned Kempshott lane and Simon Preedy agreed stating: “Yes. Many there. My parents have been liaising with HCC for months following Gas and Water Repairs in the road. Poor camber of the road and pavement leaves a constant puddle in the road outside their property.”
