The flag outside Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has been lowered to half-mast in honour of the late Captain Tom.

It was announced that Sir Tom Moore had died yesterday at the age of 100 following a short battle with coronavirus.

He won millions of fans worldwide last year when he raised millions for the NHS by completing 100 laps of his house.

A spokesman for Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council said: "We’re flying our Union flag at half-mast today to mark the sad death of Captain Sir Tom Moore yesterday."

Residents can view the flag outside the council's offices at the bottom of War Memorial Park.

"His legacy will live on through the work of our NHS workers, who have shown exactly the same attributes while fighting COVID-19 in our hospitals.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Captain Sir Tom’s loved ones. May he rest in peace.”
