A NEWNHAM pub has been awarded a Global Hospitality Award - after the community fought to keep it alive and kicking.

Old House at Home at Newnham Green, Hook, has been named Best Family-Run Restaurant in Hampshire in the 2020 awards run by Lux Life Magazine.

The historic eatery also took top spot as the Leading Purveyors of Hampshire Gins 2020.

Owners Chris and Donna Richards told the Gazette: “The past 12 months have not been easy for everyone, and to have this award meant more than recognition for what we have done so far, it has given us confidence for the future.”

Old House At Home was originally built in the late 18th century for the builders of Tylney Hall and has operated as a pub ever since.

In 2014, it came under threat as it was closed and plans made to redevelop the site into private housing.

However, the Newnham community fought to save it and, in July 2018, the Donna and Chris took it over.

They are passionate believers in family-run independent businesses and community atmosphere, and hope that they will soon be able to welcome their customers ‘home’.
