CORONAVIRUS cases are beginning to fall across Basingstoke and Deane, figures show.

But there is still a hotspot in Popley, with the area having one of the nation's worst outbreaks.

Basingstoke and Deane, which has the third highest case rate out of Hampshire's districts, only behind Portsmouth and Rushmoor, saw its coronavirus cases fall by 6.3 per cent in the seven days to January 19.

And in many of the borough's middle layer super output areas (MSOAs), cases are either levelling off or falling.

Previous hotspots such as Basingstoke Central and Brighton Hill have seen the number of cases confirmed in the last week fall in comparison to the week before.

And in Viables, which had a rolling rate of more than 1,000 just weeks ago, has seen an increase of just two new cases.

The decrease in cases has also been seen in the rural areas of the borough, with the likes of Bramley, East Oakley, Whitchurch, Overton and Kingsclere all seeing fewer cases.

But in Popley, the situation is worse.

Basingstoke Gazette: Whilst the number of cases decrease across the borough, in Popley it is still increasing.Whilst the number of cases decrease across the borough, in Popley it is still increasing.

It has recorded 136 new cases in the week to January 19. Its rolling rate - the number of positive cases per 100,000 of the population - is 977.5, putting it among the highest in England.

And case rates remain high in Winklebury & Rooksdown; Daneshill & Little Basing; and South Ham & West Ham.

An interactive map on the government website shows just how many people have tested positive for the virus in each area of the county over the seven-day period up to Tuesday, January 19.

The interactive map allows users to type in their postcode and see how many cases were reported in their area and if it has increased or decreased from the week before. The darker the colour on the image, the more positive test results have been recorded.

The map highlights which areas of the nation have three or more confirmed cases of the virus and colour co-coordinates the areas by how many cases they have.

The map is split up into Middle Layer Super Output Areas (MSOAs), which are generally smaller than council wards and are based on population, rather than geographical area.
