TRAVEL by train towards Southampton is currently subject to disruption due to a "points failure" between Basingstoke and Eastleigh earlier this afternoon.

A points failure means that one of the sections of track at a junction that lets trains move from one line to another has broken.

South Western Railways has said that, while the line has now reopened, train services running through these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised, with disruption expected until around 3pm this afternoon.

A spokesperson said earlier this afternoon: "We have been informed that there is a problem with a set of points between Basingstoke and Eastleigh. This means that trains cannot currently run towards Easteligh/Southampton.

"For further information or onward travel advice please speak to a member of staff or use a station help point.

"We are very sorry for any delay that this may cause to your journey."

The rail company is reminding passengers whose journey is delayed by more than 15 minutes that they may be entitled to claim compesation at www.southwesternrailway.com/contact-and-help/refunds-and-compensation
