THE London-bound line is currently blocked, due to a fallen tree which is blocking the railway between Basingstoke and Winchester.

Resulting delays and service cancellations are expected until at least 10.30pm this evening, South Western Railway has confirmed.

In a tweet, the company wrote: "Due to a tree blocking the railway between Winchester and Basingstoke the London bound line is blocked.

"Train services running through these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until 22:30."

It added: "Our specialist teams are working to clear the tree from the track.

"For further information or onward travel advice please speak to a member of staff or use a station help point.

"We are very sorry for any delay that this may cause to your journey."

There is currently a yellow weather warning in place for Basingstoke due to Storm Christoph, which is scheduled to last until midday tomorrow.

The Met Office has warned travellers to expect:

  • Flooding of a few homes and businesses in urbanised areas is likely
  • Spray and flooding on roads will make for dangerous driving conditions resulting in longer journey times.
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
