GOVERNMENT statistics reveal that the virus is growing exponentially in 14 areas of the borough.

In some areas, the number of new cases recorded in the seven days to January 2 is more than 100 per cent up on the previous seven days.

Across the borough, 754 people tested positive for Covid-19 in the seven days to January 2, which was 262 more than the week before, an increase of 53.3 per cent.

Basingstoke now has the fifth highest number of cases in Hampshire after, Southampton, Portsmouth, Rushmoor and Havant.

The spike in cases means the borough is now classified as a hotspot area with a rolling rate of 427 cases per 100,000 people.

An interactive map on the government website shows just how many people have tested positive for the virus in each area of the county over the seven-day period up to Tuesday, December 29.

The map allows users to type in their postcode and see how many cases were reported in their area and if it has increased or decreased from the week before. The darker the colour on the image, the more positive test results have been recorded.

It highlights which areas of the nation have three or more confirmed cases of the virus and colour co-coordinates the areas by how many cases they have.
