Basingstoke's policing team have outlined what they are doing to crack down on a number of concerns of residents.

Drug dealing, drunk and disorderly behaviour and speeding were just some of the concerns raised by residents in December's beat surgery, held by officers at Hampshire Constabulary's Basingstoke neighbourhood policing team.

The top of town as well as Pennine Way in Buckskin were specifically mentioned by the team as areas of concern for drug dealing.

They said: "We conduct regular patrols around the town centre and work very closely with our partners, including the council's Community Safety officers and the management and security in retail and licensed premises.

"Incidents of drug dealing are often identified via the live CCTV system, which is monitored 24/7 who alert us to any kind of incident."

In terms of Pennine Way, they are "adjusting their patrols accordingly to directly detect and disrupt this activity".

However, they are asking people to continue to report incidents via 101 or online, or calling 999 if a crime is being committed.

Friday and Saturday night patrols are being carried out in response to drunk and disorderly behaviour in roads neighbouring the town centre, whilst there will be an increased police presence in the Lower Brook Street and Hanmore Road areas of Brookvale and Chineham after reports of speeding.

"A plan is being formulated for active 'speed measuring' patrols to be included," they added.

Another issue raised by residents was motor vehicle thefts.

The policing team said: "This is a complex issue that affects towns right across the county and the UK as a whole.

"We will see a spate of offences happen in a small area then move to a different part of town.

"As soon as a pattern is identified, we alter patrols to detect and deter repeat offences.

"We need help from the public and local residents to combat these thefts.

"Please report any suspicious activity as soon as possible so that a pattern can be identified sooner and patrols put in place, therefore making it more likely to catch suspects.

"If it’s happening there and then, ring 999. Additionally please follow our advice on how to keep your valuables safe."
