AN alleged fly-tipper was caught on CCTV appearing to dump a fitness bike in Cleaver Road in Basingstoke.

The man was seen passing through the camera with the fitness cycle during the night, placing it on the side of the road, and leaving empty-handed within a few seconds.

The video was shared by a Cleaver Road resident who caught the incident on his doorbell camera.

“I have been hearing a lot about fly-tippers these days and became a victim to one,” he told the Gazette.

He has reported the incident to the Basingstoke and Dean council and posted the video on ClearWaste website.

Member for Environment and Enforcement Cllr Hayley Eachus said: “The council’s environmental enforcement team are investigating this incident and encourage anyone with information to contact them on 01256 844 844 or ehteam@basingstoke.gov.uk.

“More and more witnesses are coming forward with information to assist our fly-tipping investigations and stamp out this crime. If you witness an incident, and it is safe to do so please make a note of any relevant vehicle registration numbers, and if possible take pictures of the dumped waste, or provide any dash-cam or CCTV footage you have, to help us investigate these criminal offences.

“Fly-tipping is a blight on our borough and is an issue we take very seriously. We spend a considerable amount of time and money removing illegally dumped waste and since May 2018, we have convicted 25 individuals for fly-tipping offences.”

There has been a rise in reports of fly-tipping in Basingstoke recently, with two men fined more than £1,500 on December 1 for dumping 13 bags of green waste.

Nicolas Goodenough, 46, and Micky Baker, 29, of Arcadia Close in Beggarwood, were convicted after pleading guilty to dumping hedge cuttings, soil and grass at a remote car park in Basingstoke on March 27 and April 2.

Meanwhile, a sofa bed and other items were found dumped in Rooksdown Lane on Thursday, November 26.
