As Hampshire moves out of lockdown into its Tier 2 restrictions, Christmas bubbles permitted from the 23rd- 27th and the UK’s regulatory body MHRA approving the Pfizer/BioNTech Vaccine, it seems that there is just reason for cautious optimism and hope entering the new year.

We are, however, not out of the woods yet, and it’s vital everyone continues to abide by the restrictions, to keep our most vulnerable safe and not to give up the critical gains made over the most recent lockdown.

This year so many vulnerable people have needed the support of others in new and unprecedented ways: from Hampshire County Council’s Coronavirus Helpline, to voluntary organisations working in our community, it is inspiring to see so many work together, with government funding and the generous support of residents, to provide vital services over the pandemic. The Foodbank has been an absolute lifeline for hundreds; Basingstoke Voluntary Action have re-established local Emergency Hubs to provide essential on the ground support during the winter months, with the help of hundreds of volunteers; community initiatives like Inspero in Kempshott have helped grow food and distribute food packages, whilst providing a beautiful community resource in its wonderful garden; and Spotlight UK Basingstoke has taken food and hygiene parcels to residents, most recently delivering presents to over 1100 children.

It’s been a privilege to regularly catch up with Basingstoke’s voluntary community over Zoom and in person where possible, and it is fantastic to see how faced with adversity the strength of community spirit prevails. The year has also been marked by sacrificial acts of kindness by all in Basingstoke; many have foregone wedding celebrations, precious visits with loved ones and the freedoms usually enjoyed as part of day to day living. I want to thank every resident of Basingstoke for their efforts to help stop the spread of the virus to protect and cherish those who are more vulnerable in society and to ensure our NHS can be there for everyone.
