THOUSANDS of people visited Better gyms, swimming pools and fitness classes around Swindon after lockdown ended.

Between the government allowing these facilities to reopen on July 24 and the latest date for available data on September 24, there have been 42,640 visits to leisure centres.

This included 29,442 visits to swimming pool facilities, 10,879 visits to gym facilities and 2,319 visits to fitness classes.

The Oasis was the most popular leisure centre owned by the company during these three months.

Male fitness fans made up 53 per cent of the gym visits, people aged 26 to 45 returned in the highest numbers, and 26 per cent of visitors were aged 51 and over.

Research shows that aerobic exercise increases immunological fitness and guards against obesity while reducing the risk of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease – three of the biggest underlying conditions for Covid-19.

A spokesperson for Better said: "Now more than ever, keeping active and engaged in our health is crucial, and having friendly, welcoming, safe spaces to do this has helped so many people get back into their routines and a little bit of normality.

“Having ensured our centres, swimming pools and fitness classes are adhering to guidelines and are safe for all, we have seen strong numbers coming back through the gym doors, and we are excited to see this confidence continue.”
