SINCE March, the Whitchurch (Hants) Community Live Events site has been entertaining the town with quizzes, cookery, music, yoga and everything in between.

With no Great Whitchurch Pub Race this year, organisers Marcus Winch, Amanda Winch and Mark Bishop were looking for a family friendly, socially distanced event which would allow the community. That is when The Great Whitchurch Scarecrow Trail was born.

What started as a small event with a goal to create 20 or 30 scarecrows, definitely captured the imagination of Whitchurch as more than 100 households stepped forward to build their own creation.

One such resident was Shelli Brown who said: "The Great Whitchurch Scarecrow Trail was a wonderful adventure for my daughter Anna-Rose.

"Not only having creative imaginations, it was so humble that our community came together. Cant wait for next year's."

The organisers built trail maps and linked up with charity Furlock Holmes Animal Care, who had been live streaming their lovely animals on the events site over lockdown.

Heather Jayne 'Chapman' Hale designed a Jack Sparrow scarecrow and was pleased to see what Whitchurch had to deliver.

"Creating Captain Jack as a family was special, but seeing the smiles from the children looking up at Jack clinging onto his flagpole was priceless.

"Great to see Whitchurch pulling together yet again as a community to put on such a fabulous show."

With hundreds of trail maps distributed, the whole town took to the streets over the bank holiday weekend to see all the scarecrows and choose a favourite.

Voting for their favourite was via Just Giving with all proceeds going to Furlock Holmes. So far the event has raised £1,350 for the charity and still rising.
