A TEENAGE girl has died in hospital after suffering injuries in a boat crash.

The 15-year-old was on board a rib that collided with a buoy in Southampton Water near Netley on Saturday morning.

A major emergency service response was sent to the incident, which took place at around 10.10am.

This included coastguard, lifeboat, ambulance and police teams.

Twelve people who were on board the vessel were taken to hospital for treatment once they were ashore. The girl was pronounced dead at hospital.

An investigation has been launched by police, coastguard and the Marine Accident Investigation Branch.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: "We are working alongside the Coastguard and Marine Accident Investigation Branch following a collision between a RIB and a buoy in Southampton Water near Netley at around 10.10am on Saturday morning.

"Twelve people who were on board were subsequently taken to hospital.

"Sadly, one of the passengers, a 15-year-old girl, was pronounced dead in hospital.

"The girl’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers from Hampshire Constabulary.

"Enquiries into the circumstances remain ongoing, and we would ask anyone who witnessed the incident, or perhaps captured footage of it, to please contact police immediately on 101, quoting incident 554 of today’s date."

Coastguard received multiple 999 and mayday calls following a collision involving a rib on Saturday morning.

The response included Hamble independent lifeboat, Calshot RNLI and a crew from Hill Head Coastguard Rescue Team.

A HM Coastguard spokeswoman said: "Three lifeboats, a Coastguard Rescue Team and the Ambulance Service were all called to assist.

"There were some injuries and the 12 people who were on board were taken to shore and handed into the care of the ambulance service. Marine Accident Investigation Branch have been informed."

Hamble independent lifeboat's duty coxswain Peter Brown said that passing boats had assisted four casualties requiring urgent medical care out of the water. 

Mr Brown's crew, which included a qualified paramedic, were first to arrive at the scene. They co-ordinated the emergency services response, provided initial treatment and ensured evacuation of casualties into waiting ambulances.
