THE RAIN didn't deter people across Basingstoke marking the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

VJ Day - which takes place annually on August 15 - marks the moment Japan surrendered in 1940.

On Saturday, veterans and residents paying their respects gathered at the war memorials across the borough.

In Sherfield, Colonel John Swanston led proceedings and gave a moving address about the war in the far east. He was joined by Burma veterans and their families.

Reverend Stephen Ball led the prayers and Andy Morgan, chairman of the parish council recited the Kohima Epitaph “When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow we gave our today.” Musician Steve Barlin played The Last Post. Donations were received on behalf of the Royal British Legion veterans.
