Thunderstorm’s are underway across Basingstoke. Here are some trusted tips on how to keep pets calm during the storm.

With yellow weather warnings in place today and tomorrow it might be useful for pet owners to learn handy tricks on how to keep their beloved friends calm during a storm.

The Gazette spoke to veterinary nurse Jo Wright from PDSA.

She said: “It is important that if your pet becomes too distressed during a storm that you seek help from a vet.

“They are able to provide support and medication if necessary because sometimes pets get very very worried and they can injure themselves.”

Jo also advises wherever possible to bring pets in from the garden during a storm.

Where this is not possible she advises adding extra bedding to hutches and covering them over to make it ‘less scary’ for the animals.

Another suggestion Jo gave was trying to create a den for cats and dogs as a safe space for them to hide away.

As well as creating a den it is important to close your windows curtains and blinds to keep the inside of the house a safe space.

Closing windows will help reduce noise alongside turning up the radio or tv to block out those scary thunder rumbles and bangs.

If the storm creates lightning closing blinds or curtains helps to make that lightning flash that bit less bright.

Playing with your animals and provides a distraction which can help destress your pet.

And last but certainly not least act as normal as you can.

Joe explained: “Try to act as normal as you can, sometimes when you become particularly alert to your surroundings you can raise awareness and anxiety in your pets so try to remain calm”.
