Residents react in shock after finding a lorry driver trapped under a bridge in the centre of the town.

Pictures show the roof of an abacus vehicle hire lorry was destroyed this afternoon, near Festival Place.

A police car, a lorry and two other vans turned up to tow away the damaged vehicle.

A resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the Gazette: "It was completely shocking to witness and I can't believe the roof has been destroyed.

"It wasn't long after police attended the scene to deal with the situation."

Another person said: "I was really scared for the driver who crashed into the bridge.

"He misjudged the height, and it could have been a lot worse."

This is not the first time drivers have gambled and got it wrong.

In November last year a van driver was caught out while attempting to pass under the infamously low-lying bridge which goes under the A3010 near Festival Place.

Hampshire Constabulary has been contacted for comment.
