RINGWOOD Town Council is calling for funding to help the high street recover from the Covid-19 crisis.
Its policy and finance committee is seeking financial support from New Forest District Council, which has been allocated money under the government's Reopening High Streets Safely Fund.
Cash is needed to temporarily restrict traffic flow along the High Street between Fridays Cross and Market Place.
The scheme would see the road restricted to a single carriageway, controlled by traffic lights, from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday.
It would increase the amount of pedestrian space available to shoppers, enabling them to comply with social distancing rules.
The mayor, Cllr Tony Ring, said: “I would welcome support from New Forest District Council in helping Ringwood High Street return as a vibrant centre."
