June 21 is International Yoga Day, and although many of us are still experiencing the lockdown blues, take the opportunity this Sunday to try something new.

Conversely, for all the existing yoga fanatics, this weekend will provide the chance to challenge your mind, core, and body in advanced meditation and yoga classes.

The spirit of yoga is echoed through its popular practise now, almost 5000 years after its origin in India.

At its core, it is a discipline of spiritual, mental, and physical practise championing elements such as concentration, self-control, and a spiritual connection to a higher energy or being. Since its philosophical roots in Epic Sanskrit, yoga has since been adapted by many countries to develop into a key form of exercise.

It is loved by many for its challenging stretches, breathing techniques, and spiritual focus on the inner soul. According to a study conducted by Yoga Statistics, the average level of digital interest in yoga increases by 73% each year (measured from December to January). It is clear to see that yoga has not only seen a surge in popularity in recent years, but also an increase in online resources for those wanting to try it out.

This International Yoga Day is certainly set in unprecedented circumstances. But even a global pandemic will not stop virtual classes and sessions from taking place this Sunday. If anything, yoga can act as an antidote for our difficult situation, if even for an hour.

I spoke to international yoga teacher Shilpa Kulkarni, about the benefits of practising yoga in our current situation. She told me, “Just as car parts constantly need to be ‘oiled’ and in motion, our body parts need exercise to keep healthy, not just in quarantine.

"Yoga has so many mental and physical benefits. I think they’re interconnected. Yoga exposes a union between our body, mind, breath, and spirit.

"We know that keeping our mind healthy is just as important as keeping our body healthy. Yoga, as a discipline, allows for a certain degree of interconnectedness that will benefit your body and your mind.

"Try something new this Yoga Day! Simple Asanas are great for beginners. That’s the great thing about yoga: you can incorporate it into your daily routine. You don’t even need fancy equipment or a special studio – it can be done from the comfort from your own home!”

In a world gripped by understandable stress, worry, and panic – yoga can provide a safe space for self-reflection, tranquillity, and peace. We’ve assembled a list of online sources that are offering various sessions and tutorials, for all skill levels, this Yoga Day. Grab some water, a mat, and remember to breathe!
