People on social media have reacted with anger after "a small minority" forced the closure of a local beauty spot.

Yesterday it was announced that the Overton poppy field would be closed after visitors caused permanent damage to parts of it.

In a message, Wildflower Turf wrote: "We are so glad that our beautiful field of poppies has been responsibly enjoyed and admired by so many of you this year," the message read.

"We have always encouraged people to enjoy the countryside, its biodiversity and its beauty. Sadly however, after a lot of consideration, as of tonight the poppy field will be closed to visitors.

"Unfortunately visitors choices today have left us with no alternative as larger parts of our crop are being irreversibly damaged due to people ignoring our signage and roaming freely through the crop.

"The poppy field and surrounding fields are private land and access is now blocked so we ask that you please respect our wishes.

"We are very sad that a small minority have ruined it for everyone else. Thank you to all of you that have made donations to The Royal British Legion, we have raised £629 to date."

People quickly turned to social media to share their thoughts on those who had forced the closure.

"We just live in a world of morons, people can't simply enjoy something they have to destroy it one way or another," one person wrote.

"Why would anyone in their right mind want to do this to beautiful poppies I am so glad I went and saw this lovely scene and got a few precious pictures," another said.

A third person wrote: "Why on earth would people even think it was a good idea to stand in the field to have pictures taken and allow their children to run around trampling them down."

Others agreed how much of a shame it was that a small minority caused so much damage.

"I wanted to take my son there but can't now as other people have destroyed it," one angry mum wrote.

Another mother said: "I was going to take my daughter to show her where her name comes from as they are so beautiful but now I can’t!"

Because of the damage caused, it is unclear when the field will be reopened to the public.
