THE Basingstoke Gazette has been shortlisted for the Weekly Newspaper of the Year award at the Society of Editors' Regional Press Awards for 2019.

The awards ceremony, due to take place this evening, had to be cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic, and instead the shortlist has been revealed this afternoon.

The awards celebrate the best of British regional and local newspaper journalism in 2019 for print and online.

The Gazette has been shortlisted in the Paid for Weekly/Sunday Newspaper of the Year Above 50,000 Monthly Reach, and has been nominated alongside a number of its sister papers, including the Reading Chronicle, the Bucks Free Press and the Warrington Guardian.

Also nominated in that category is Kent Messenger, Maidenhead Advertiser, MEN on Sunday and the Newbury Weekly News.

The winners will be announced on Friday, June 19.

Over the course of 2019, the Gazette has continued to shine a light on a whole host of important issues to the borough.

This included its investigation into the scourge of County Lines, following the tragic death of London teenager Taylor Williams in Basingstoke last August.

Additionally, the team have covered the plight of Basingstoke Town Football Club and shone a light on environmental issues facing the town.
