Multiple Black Lives Matter protests have been organised for this week in Basingstoke.

A Facebook event titled “Peaceful BLM Protest – Basingstoke” has been created and invited people across the borough to Market Place near McDonald's on Thursday at 2pm.

The event page reads: “In the wake of latest events we must do our part.

“The Black Lives Matter movement has been going for a long time, but the general population have failed to do our best to eliminate racial discrimination, violence and even murder.

“This isn't just about George Floyd. This isn't just an American problem. This is a worldwide problem.”

Mr Floyd, 46, died in Minneapolis, Minnesota, when a white police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes, sparking days of protests in cities across the country and overseas.

“We must protest peacefully, and with respect to all others wanting to walk past and access amenities,” it added.

“We will attend the location from 2pm until 5pm so be sure to bring fluids to stay hydrated and snacks to keep you going.

“Come and stand (or kneel) with me. Let's get together in solidarity with our brothers and sister all over the world.”

Another separate Facebook event has also been created and is due to take place on Friday at 1pm.

This particular one already has 42 people “interested” in the event.

That page read: “We are meeting at the first ponds (by the paddling pool) at 12pm.

“This is a peaceful protest to build awareness and show support. Please bring banners, water and food and stay safe."

Organiser Izzy Fellows said they will be ensuring social distancing is adhered to.
