A WITNESS was shocked to see a man crash into a telegraph pole, roll into a ditch and flee the scene early hours of this morning.

The crash happened next to Old School Road as the witness was driving up the A30 with his friend in the car.

They were headed towards Basingstoke from Hook when they saw the impact at 1.40am on May 29.

He told the Gazette: "I saw the car flying past and it hit the telegraph pole and rolled into a ditch.

"The bloke hopped out of the car and ran off towards Newnham.

"It was a bit of a shock. People have been driving like idiots.

"The driver didn't look injured. It was late at night and hard to see."

The witness said they went to get petrol and returned at 2am to find two police cars at the scene.

"There was an older bloke parked in his four-by-four truck who said he saw the chap running off to Newnham," the witness added.

Hampshire Constabulary has been contacted for comment.
