A WITNESS has spoken about the moment a group broke out into a fight this evening before emergency services were called.

An area of Winklebury playing fields remains cordoned off tonight with police on guard after an incident took place at around 6.30pm.

Hampshire Constabulary has not yet issued a statement but witnesses have described a fight between a group which left two people injured.

A woman, from South Ham, said she saw a "large fight" involving five men from 6.35pm.

She told the Gazette: "Me and my younger brother were at the basketball courts at the Winklebury park for an hour or so playing basketball.

"At about 6.35pm a group of about five men walked down the long pathway, two of which had bikes and so were further ahead than the others.

"I immediately recognised one of the men as he’s often around town."

She said she believed the man might be homeless.

She continued: "They got to the end of the pathway and there was a large fight where it got very violent and they all joined in, they were also arguing using the c word.

"This went on for some time, everyone at the park stopped and stared. The men then walked away separately in an angry manner from the area where the fight took place, leaving behind two men.

"One was laying down and the other was sitting up. The bikes were on the floor next to them. They seemed to be injured, the one on the floor wasn’t moving and the one sitting up was struggling to stand up. We left the scene after that."

A neighbour who lives opposite Winklebury playing fields also said she heard the loud argument.

Amy said: “I could hear a bloke shouting. I knew it wasn’t next door, I could tell it was farther away. He was having a massive argument with someone. He was calling someone the c-word. He was going wild and was very angry.

“Then it just kind of stopped.”

Amy decided to go outside to see what was happening when she noticed emergency services arriving on the scene.

She said: “There were loads of police everywhere, police dogs. An air ambulance was suddenly ahead.

“There were two people that look like they’d been injured.”

Amy said she was unsure about what the argument was over. “It could have been anything. The guy, whoever he was, was very unhappy.”

The Gazette has contacted Hampshire Constabulary for comment.
