A BASINGSTOKE teenager in self-isolation is determined to raise money for the NHS as a way to say thank you for saving her life.

Inspiring Alex Dawes, 19, has been rowing the distance of the English Channel from her home. Each day, she completes 1km in distance and uses social media to do a daily vlog at 3pm.

The type 1 diabetic, who also has non-epileptic attack disorder, was bullied at school and uses her platform to talk about mental health in the hope of helping others.

She said: "Throughout my life I have had many setbacks, from being diagnosed as type 1 diabetic at 16 and suffering from non-epileptic attack disorder for the past two years, they have supported me through it all.

"I arguably wouldn't still be here if it wasn't for the amazing men and women who work for the NHS and this is my way of saying thank you."

Alex has even been taking the rower out into the street on Thursdays for the Clap For Carers event, to show her support.

Her final 1000m will be done outside on Monday, June 1 at 7pm.
