A seven-year-old girl will be cycling 10km on Saturday to help raise money for the Basingstoke Food Bank.

Zoe Metcalf was inspired by Captain Tom and his fundraising endeavours and decided to ask her mum Leanne, 37, what they could do to help.

"Initially she wanted to raise money for NHS, but we got to talking more about the other effects of coronavirus, like the homeless and those who have lost their jobs," Leanne told the Gazette.

"We donated a lot of food to the homeless at Christmas time and we had lots of conversations then about why people end up homeless and how food banks work.

"So it obviously stuck with Zoe as she remembered that and said we should do something to help the food bank again.

Zoe has already raised more than £350, more than tripling the initial target they set of £100.

Leanne said Zoe has always been active and is constantly setting herself new challenges.

"When she first learned to do somersaults, she was then determined to do 100 in a row," the Sherfield Park mum added.

"She has severe anxiety and struggles a lot with that so it’s really great that she does have a lot of strength in other areas.

"She always sees things through and we are just so proud. From putting up posters on our front window, to mentioning to neighbours, it has all just been fantastic."

So on Satruday, Zoe will set off on her ride around Sherfield Park, Chineham, Old Basing and lots of places en route to the finish line.
