Travellers have been moved off Down Grange running track less than 24 hours after arriving at the site.

Saturday evening, a large unauthorised encampment was spotted at the site.

But posting on Facebook Sunday morning, Basingstoke Conservatives wrote: "Thanks to the Conservative-led injunction against unauthorised encampments across the town and surrounding areas, the encampment has now been moved on by the police.

"Our injunction means that unauthorised encampments such as this last for hours rather than weeks on end.

"Thanks to the continuing hard work by the police and council officers."

Adding to this, Conservative councillor Simon Bound said that the full extent of the damage caused will be assessed Monday morning and that a "small amount" of waste will need to be cleared and two sets of locks to be replaced.

"Important sports facility protected and kept open for physical exercise," Cllr Bound said.
