A man has been detained under the Mental Health Act after a police officer was stabbed on Easter Sunday.

Officers responded to an incident at an apartment block in Churchill Way at 4.30pm on April 12.

Attending the scene, an officer, who is in his 20s, was stabbed with two knives, causing injuries to his head, neck and hands.

He was rushed to Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital for treatment and was discharged the following day.

A 43-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

On Tuesday, Hampshire Police issued a statement regarding the man they arrested.

"A 43-year-old man arrested on suspicion of the attempted murder of a Hampshire police officer, has been released from custody, but remains under investigation," the statement read.

"The man has been detained under Section 2 of the Mental Health Act."
