Police received a number of calls last night after a large group of males were found congregating at Beggarwood Park, flouting social distancing measures.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said at just after 5.35pm, they took a number of calls from the public about the group amid fears one was carrying a shotgun.

Two police helicopters and ground units were called to the scene where an air rifle was recovered.

The group were spoken to and given 'strong advice' about gathering during the lockdown period.

Current government advice states that residents must stay at home unless absolutely necessary and must only socialise with those in their household. 

The Gazette received reports from concerned memebers of the public who said they felt 'intimidated' and 'afraid' after coming into contact with the big group between 5pm and 6pm.

A spokesman for the force said: "We can confirm that from around 5.35pm yesterday evening, Wednesday, April 1, we received a number of reports from members of the public that a large group of males had been seen congregating in Beggarwood Park, Basingstoke.

"There were also reports that at least one of the group, which was believed to be made up of between 20-30 males, was carrying a shotgun.

"Officers attended and the police helicopter was also deployed to monitor the situation.

"The group were stopped and spoken to and a weapon, which was an air rifle, was recovered.

"A juvenile has been referred for a community resolution after admitting possessing the air rifle.

"The group were dispersed and given strong advice about congregating during the lockdown period. No arrests were made."
