Police have been dealing with an incident in Festival Place this afternoon.

The shopping centre's security guards were seen holding a man down on the floor outside Iceland, at lunchtime. 

A spokesman for Festival Place said it was unable to comment as it was a 'police matter'. 

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: "We were called at 12.16pm to reports of an assault on a man at Festival Place.

"A 37-year-old man from Basingstoke was arrested on suspicion of assault. The suspect had a small injury to his wrist but the victim received no injuries."

The incident had been wrapped up by 1pm with the shopping centre back to normal. 

Police cars were spotted parked outside the Malls with officers patrolling the town centre.
