Basingstoke football fans have overwhelming voted against staying in Winklebury permanently in a recent poll.

Former football player, Steve Frangou has set up a poll on the Basingstoke Town Football Club fan forum asking fans to vote between the club staying at Winklebury permanently or moving to Winklebury temporarily until the club can return to the Camrose or move into a like-for-like stadium.

Within 24 hours more than 50 people voted in the poll with not a single person voting to stay at Winklebury permanently.

Steve said: “This clearly tell the community club board that it’s fan base only see Winklebury as a short gap stop.

"I feel the community club need to issue a statement to the people of Basingstoke declaring their position on playing at Winklebury."

The club recently announced that planning permission has been granted for improvements to the Winklebury Sports Complex.

One supporter commented: "Winklebury should be temporary. Razzak should be coughing up a fair few million for a new stadum to be built somewhere in parallel to him being allowed to develop on the Camrose.

"Camrose is condemned but he should not be able to develop on it until he funds a new stadium."

The plans, approved by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council on Friday, include the building of a new clubhouse, a new storage container and turnstiles.

Another fan commented added: "The priority has to be getting the team back to playing in Basingstoke as agreed at the last community club meeting.

"This has to be Winklebury, whether we want it to be or not. Once settled at Winklebury the council are unlikely to find a site for a new stadium and Basron are unlikely to pay for it.

Kevin White, director of the community club added that discussions are underway between the club, Hampshire FA and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to start development that would allow them to move into the ground for the start of the 2020-21 season.

Speaking to the Gazette, Kevin added: "It is a massive step forward and also it is a step forward that the people of Winklebury want us on their dooorstep.

"We had a really positive meeting with the council and Hampshire FA, they are looking at ways that they can kick-start the development."

The site is in Winklebury Park, just off Winklebury Way, and is bordered by the Ringway to the east and the railway line to the south, limiting future development on the site.
