A CAR has been destroyed by a fire in Oakridge in the early hours of this morning.

Fire crews were called at around 2.15am to Mullins Close with a vehicle "well alight".

All that remained at the scene on Thursday morning was a pile of ash, with broken glass on the ground and the smell of burning in the air.

One crew from Basingstoke used a high pressure hose reel and two breathing apparatuses to extinguish the blaze, which caused so much damage it was impossible to tell the make of the car, according to Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

A spokesperson said: "Several calls were being received by control at 2.16am. One crew from Basingstoke attended.

"One vehicle was well alight in the public highway. It was extinguished using one high pressure hose reel and it was severly damaged."

The fire was extinguished within an hour and ten minutes.
