Shocking photographs show Basingstoke Town's historic football ground unrecognisable as the owners have torn up the pitch to make way for a new road.

Yesterday saw the start of construction work needed to tear up the Camrose to make way for a new road to be built in its place.

The plans have not yet been put in motion as planning permission has not been approved, however that hasn't stopped the new land owners from digging up the ground.

Basingstoke Gazette:

Director of Basingstoke Town Football Club, Kevin White, told the Gazette: “We are incredibly sad at the loss of Camrose Football grounds, it has been the heart of the community since the 1950s.

"I remember when my dad used to take me to training sessions at the club when I was young so it is a real loss for the borough.

"We're never going to play there again now, it's the end of the era for us."

The community led club were evicted from the grounds in August where they now share grounds with Winchester Football club over 20 miles outside of the town.

Basingstoke Gazette:

The football club have since set up a GoFundMe page in order to raise £5,000 to help the club to move back to Basingstoke where they hope to take up residence in Winklebury Football Club.

This comes after a planning application was lodged to Hampshire County Council for the two-way single carriage link between the mini roundabout and the A30 back in November 2019.

The proposed plans to redevelop the land will be for residential use with a separate application submitted to include a proposed care home to the site.

Basron Developments Ltd plan to build an additional 89 homes to form part of the wider redevelopment of Brighton Hill roundabout which is set to cost £18.6 million.
