STARS including Helena Bonham Carter were spotted in Winchester as a popular Netflix series was filmed at the cathedral.

Crews for The Crown set up in the city on Monday (January 20) and were shooting two scenes – the funeral of Lord Mountbatten and Charles and Diana's wedding.

Helena Bonham Carter was seen in costume as the grieving Princess Margaret and Olivia Colman, who plays Queen Elizabeth, was spotted in the Cathedral Close.

Emma Corrin, in full makeup to look like Princess Diana, was also pictured walking around the back of the cathedral.

The show last came to Winchester in 2018, taking over the Guildhall and also shot several scenes of early shows in the Winchester College area around the Wykeham Arms in January 2016.

This time, crews set up cherry pickers to shine light through the cathedral windows to make it seem like summertime.

Lord Mountbatten's funeral was held in on a sunny day in September 1979 after he was killed by a bomb hidden on his fishing boat in Ireland. Charles and Diana also married on a hot day in July 1981.

Colebrook Street Car Park, which has 86 spaces, is set to reopen today (January 23) after being closed to make way for production vehicles.

The cathedral will also reopen to the public.

The Crown has been largely successful with awards, and its wins include the Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Television Series and the Satellite Award for Best Drama Television Series.

Helena Bonham Carter and Olivia Colman also recently scooped the Screen Actor's Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for their roles.

Season four, which will feature the scenes at the cathedral, is set to be released at some point next year.
