POLICE officers investigating a fatal collision in Popley last week are appealing for the driver of a van that witnessed the incident.

Officers believe that the driver of a dark red or maroon van, which was directly behind the Vauxhall Vectra that hit Matt Harris on Thursday evening, could provide "important information".

They add that enquiries into the cause of the crash are ongoing.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "Officers investigating a fatal collision in Basingstoke last week are keen to locate the driver of a dark red or maroon van who witnessed the incident.

"It is believed a dark red or maroon van was directly behind the Vauxhall Vectra at the time of the collision on Popley Way just before 6.30pm last Thursday (January 2).

"We believe the driver of the van could provide important information in relation to this incident and officers are keen to speak with the driver.

"Do you drive a red or maroon van and were you on Popley Way on this day? Maybe a friend or family member drives one?

Emergency services descended on Popley at around 6.30pm last Thursday after the fatal collision between a motorcyle and a Vauxhall Vectra.

Police officers shut off the junction of Popley Way and Abbey Road for several hours, and it was confirmed on Friday that a man had sadly passed away.

Matt Harris was named locally as the victim, and a GoFundMe page has since been set up for his family.

The 34-year-old from Basingstoke was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, who has since been bailed.
