A HART village is set to get a new flood defence scheme after the council's cabinet approved funding.

Phoenix Green will benefit from the £70,000 scheme, which was authorised to be spent on the project at a Hart District Council meeting on Thursday evening.

It will see protection given to 38 properties in the village.

It comes after the same amount has been promised from Vivid, because of the "positive impact it will have on mitigating the risk of flooding to our homes".

The money is rounded off by grants from the Department of Environmental Fisheries and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and Environment Agency (EA), totalling £330,000.

Phoenix Green has been hit with a number of floods over the last two decades, including in 2007, where 20 properties were affected.

Following the incident, Hart council ran a feasibility scheme, funded by the EA, into building such a flood alleviation scheme.

The first phase of the works will be completed by spring 2021, with the second phase, implementing natural flood risk management measures, will be completed during the 2021-22 financial year.
