POLICE have confirmed that a man has died after a 'serious incident' in Popley last night.

The 34-year-old from Basingstoke was pronounced dead at the scene after his Honda CRF motorbike and a Vauxhall Vectra were involved in a collision at the junction of Popley Way and Abbey Road.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police, the ambulance service and the fire brigade were called to the incident last night at around 6.30pm, with the junction of Popley Way and Abbey Road closed for several hours.

Two fire engines, as well as an ambulance, critical care unit and several police officers attended the incident and closed the road for some time.

Officers were turning vehicles around at the edge of the police cordon, with a number of people standing on the Abbey Road side of the tape.

Hampshire Constabulary are now appealing for anyone who saw the incident to get in touch.

A spokesperson told the Gazette: "Officers investigating the collision are keen to speak with anyone who may have witnessed it.

"Maybe you have a dash cam and captured footage of either of the vehicles in the moments leading up to the collision?

Residents spoke of disruption and tailbacks affecting the area.

One person wrote on social media at the time: "Finally almost home after being caught up in the tailback after a nasty accident involving a car and a motorcycle on Popley Way.

"It looks nasty with lots of emergency vehicles in attendance."

Another added: "Avoid Popley Way tonight people. Huge accident at the bottom of Abbey road by the church and road has been closed."

The road re-opened this morning.

The incident took place on Thursday evening, just hours after a 53-year-old man was killed and another person was taken to hospital in two separate crashes.

The 53-year-old man, who has not yet been named, was travelling southbound on the M3 between junctions 5 (A287/Hook) and 6 (A339/Basingstoke) when his Volkswagen Golf hit the central reservation.

The victim's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Additionally, there were queues stretching almost five miles of the A33 after another serious, multi-vehicle crash occurred during the Thursday evening rush hour.

One person was extricated from a vehicle by the Fire Service and taken to hospital was a 'serious leg injury', whilst two others were treated at the scene.
