TWO fire engines were called out to a 'serious incident' after a crash on Popley Way last night.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service attended alongside South Central Ambulance Service and Hampshire Constabulary to the incident that occurred around 6.30pm last night.

They say that two crews provided support to SCAS whilst treating the casualty at the scene.

Hampshire Constabulary have not yet provided further information on the incident, whilst SCAS say that the police are handling the release of the information.

What happened?

A car and motorbike collided at the junction of Abbey Road and Popley Way, at around 6.30pm last night.

Two fire engines, as well as an ambulance, critical care unit and several police officers attended the incident and closed the road for some time.

Officers were turning vehicles around at the edge of the police cordon, with a number of people standing on the Abbey Road side of the tape.

Residents spoke of disruption and tailbacks affecting the area.

One person wrote on social media at the time: "Finally almost home after being caught up in the tailback after a nasty accident involving a car and a motorcycle on Popley Way.

"It looks nasty with lots of emergency vehicles in attendance."

Another added: "Avoid Popley Way tonight people. Huge accident at the bottom of Abbey road by the church and road has been closed."

The road re-opened this morning.

What have the emergency services said?

SCAS have said that all information will be released by Hampshire Constabulary, who have not provided any further information.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service added: "We were requested by SCAS at 18.37 to assist with an RTC on Popley Way.

"Two crews from Basingstoke attended.

"HFRS provided support to SCAS by assisting with treatment of casualty.

"The stop message came in at 19.24."

What else happened on Thursday?

The incident took place on Thursday evening, just hours after a 53-year-old man was killed and another person was taken to hospital in two separate crashes.

The 53-year-old man, who has not yet been named, was travelling southbound on the M3 between junctions 5 (A287/Hook) and 6 (A339/Basingstoke) when his Volkswagen Golf hit the central reservation.

The victim's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Additionally, there were queues stretching almost five miles of the A33 after another serious, multi-vehicle crash occurred during the Thursday evening rush hour.

One person was extricated from a vehicle by the Fire Service and taken to hospital was a 'serious leg injury', whilst two others were treated at the scene.
