THREE people were treated for injuries after a multi-vehicle crash near Basingstoke yesterday (Thursday).

The A33, near Sherfield-on-Loddon, was closed in both directions after an incident just after 4.30pm and remained shut until late last night.

It has since been reopened this morning with traffic moving as normal.

Last night the fire service told the Gazette that one casualty had been extricated from a vehicle, before being taken to hospital by ambulance.

And this morning South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) has confirmed that one person with a "serious leg injury" was treated at the scene before being taken to Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, with two others treated at the scene for minor injuries.

A spokesperson for SCAS said: "We were contacted by Hampshire Police Control Room at 16:49 yesterday advising us of a multi-vehicle collision on the A33 at Sherfield-on-Lodden.

"We sent three ambulances, a paramedic team leader in a rapid response vehicle and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance critical care car to the incident.

"One patient with a serious leg injury was treated at the scene and then taken to North Hampshire Hospital, Basingstoke, with the air ambulance team travelling with the patient.

"Two further patients were treated at the scene for minor injuries."

Police had earlier been called at around 4.41pm and reported "lots of debris" at the scene.

The fire service also attended, receiving the call at 4.46pm to what it described as a three-vehicle crash with one person trapped in their vehicle.

Three crews from Basingstoke attended, and one female casualty was extricated while two others were then given immediate emergency care.

The crash caused the road to remain closed for a number of hours, causing length delays and long tailbacks past Chineham to the south and Stratfield Turgis to the north.

It has since been reopened with normal traffic conditions restored.
