UP TO SEVEN cars have been involved in a pile-up on the M3 after hitting a dog.

The incident happened just after 1pm, and it is believed that a car hit the young black Labrador that was running loose in the road.

According to police, a Mini and Mazda then collided after the initial crash.

Traffic service ROMANSE has confirmed that two lanes have been blocked, causing 90 minute delays.

Two patients have minor injuries and are being taken to hospital for further assessment, according to South Central Ambulance Service.

A witness added that there was heavy rain moments before and he believed a car may have lost control and crashed into others. 

He said there was a man on the side of the road with injuries.

The incident happened on the northbound carriageway just before junction 6.

Traffic maps shows queues building back towards junction 8 (A303/Andover).

Emergency services are currently on scene.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "We received a call at around 1pm this afternoon with reports of a collision on the M3 between junctions 6 and 7.

"A car had struck a dog that was running loose in the road.

"Subsequently, a Mini and a Mazda collided on the road.

"Emergency services are on scene."

A South Central Ambulance Service added: "We received a 999 call at 13:02 reporting two car collision on the M3 northbound between J7-J6.

"We currently have an ambulance crew at the scene who are assessing two patients with minor injuries and both will be going to hospital for further treatment."
