Firefighters managed to quell a blaze at a Basingstoke block of flats tonight after quick-thinking at the scene.

Up to 30 firefighters descended on the Skyline Plaza in the centre of town just before 6pm when a fire broke out on the second floor.

They blocked off the building to stop anyone entering and evacuated residents on the second floor. Breaking into an air vent, crews cleverly passed the hose through it to reach the blaze.

Due to the quick action, no injuries were reported and it was brought under control speedily.

It is believed the fire was caused by a candle, with Hampshire Fire and Rescue now urging residents to be cautious with candles.

It is thought the blaze was caused by a candle.

Six fire engines and special appliances from Basingstoke, Overton, Tadley, Hartley Wintney and Odiham attended the scene, which was called in at 5.51pm.

A spokesperson said that only one, non-emergency call came in about the blaze, saying it was "lucky" that they responded so quickly.

They have also urged people to use candles wisely, making sure they are extinguished before leaving the building and they are not near flammables or furniture.
