Residents looked up at the night's sky in awe tonight as a beam of light shined up to the stars.

But it was not a supernatural phenomenon - but a poignant way for gatherers at a special memorial event to remember loved ones they have lost.

St Michael's Hospice tonight held their Light Up A Life event at their Basingstoke-based hospice next to North Hampshire Hospital.

Scores gathered for the event which started at 6pm. This evening's proceedings were designed to gives families and individuals an opportunity to celebrate the life of a loved one by lighting up the stars.

And they quite literally did - with a stunning beam of light illuminating the night's sky above the town.

Gatherers heard Christmas carols sung by Ooh Mama Ladies Choir, while enjoying a warm glass of mulled wine alongside delicious mince pies.

The Light up a Life appeal and service is open to everyone, not just those who have been in contact with St Michael's Hospice.
