A MAN who caused an accident after drink-driving the day he came home from a holiday has been disqualified from driving.
Joshua Giddings, 18 of Sherwood Close, was involved in the incident on Winchester Road Roundabout at around 1.45am on October 3.
The court heard how Mr Giddings had been drinking on the flight back to the UK, and after getting a taxi home from the airport, thought he “would be fine to drive”.
However, when police arrived at the scene of his crashed white Vauxhall Astra, officers suspected that he had been drinking.
His breathalyser test showed he had 40 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, which was slightly above the drink-drive limit.
“When asked what had happened he confirmed he was driving and the officers were concerned he might be under the influence of alcohol,” prosecutor Katie Prince said.
Representing himself at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning, Mr Giddings said: “I just got home off my holiday, I was having a drink or two on the plane and thought I would be fine to drive.”
He told the court that he wanted to get some food, and that his dog had just been put down.
The bench gave Giddings a £213 fine, as well as ordering him to pay a £32 victim surcharge and £85 in costs.
He was also disqualified from driving for 12 months.
