SPANNING three generations, as told by a grandmother to a grandson, Alex and Eliza, is a tale that weaves through history.

Coming to the Proteus Creation Space, the story follows Zubair’s grandmother.

As a girl she lived through the death and destruction of the 1947 partition between India and Pakistan, but now she’s like everyone else’s grandmother. Old and wrinkly, slow in speech and speed.

At a time when relations between India and Pakistan are again in the news, and rooted in those family stories that are sometimes only uncovered by accident, Umar Butt, Associate Artist of ARC Stockton, has written and devised a new show that is full of universal themes explored through powerful storytelling and evocative live music.

Alex and Eliza is a deeply personal story from writer Umar Butt, the story of his own grandmother, the story of a young couple fleeing their country, their religion and their lives, for love and freedom.

The production comes to the Proteus Creation Space on Wednesday, October 16.
