FUNDRAISERS were hot footing it across the grounds of St Michael’s Hospice to support the charity.

On Saturday, 45 brave participants stepped out of their comfort zone by walking 20 feet over red hot embers for a charity firewalk.

Before the first steps were taken, those who were getting ready to feel the heat went through a training session which was provided by BLAZE offering top tips to ensure all participants faced the flames without any fear of pain or injury.

When the flames were lit at 8pm a huge cheer went up from the gathered crowd of walkers, well-wishers, Hospice staff and volunteers, creating an electric atmosphere for all.

Volunteers old and new were joined by hospice staff along with head of patient services at the Aldermaston Road facility, Julie Spreadbury.

Iain Cameron, chief executive at St. Michael’s Hospice said: “I was so taken aback by the support we received.

“The sight of supporters joining a large number of our own staff to bravely take part will stay with me for quite a while; it was a true display of togetherness within our community.

“The money raised from the firewalk will help us to continue to deliver specialist care and support local people at a challenging time of their lives.”

Community events co-ordinator at the hospice, Vicki Mason, added: “It was incredible to see so many people facing their fears to support our Hospice, with our youngest participant just 14 year’s old.

“The atmosphere on the night was brilliant and speaking as one of the participants, I loved stepping out of my comfort zone to take on such an unusual and thrilling challenge.”

The hospice requires around £5 million each year to fund its work with around £4.2 million of this raised via initiatives such as the lottery, gifts, donations and other non-governmental routes.
