PEOPLE wanting to experience how the other half live now have the chance to be treated like royalty - as Highclere Castle is listed on Airbnb.

To mark the release of the Downton Abbey film, the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon have posted their Hampshire stately home on the booking site.

Fans of the show are being invited to apply to stay at the Jacobean residence for a "once in a lifetime" visit.

For the price of £120 for one night, the couple will join the earl and countess for evening cocktails in the saloon followed by a traditional dinner in the state dining room, waited on by the castle’s own butler.

The advert reads: "For the first time, two guests are cordially invited to immerse themselves in life at Highclere Castle and will be treated like royalty during their stay.

"You will get the opportunity to explore iconic rooms you know so well from Downton Abbey, such as the Drawing Room and the Library.

“For one night, you can follow in the footsteps of kings and queens and enjoy life as a Lord or Lady to celebrate the upcoming motion picture event, Downton Abbey.”

Reservations open at noon on Tuesday, October 1.

Applicants are expected to have a record of good reviews from their previous Airbnb bookings and must show they are “passionate about Downton Abbey” in their application.

“It’s an absolute privilege and pleasure to call Highclere Castle my home and I am delighted to be able to share it on Airbnb for a truly unique stay,” wrote Lady Carnarvon in the advert.

“Highclere Castle has been in the Carnarvon family since 1679 and has an incredibly rich history. I am passionate about the stories and heritage of Highclere Castle, and I am looking forward to welcoming our future guests.”

The stately home has become an icon since the success of Downton Abbey, but it also has historically significance throughout the Second World War.

The iconic Hampshire property was home to evacuees, whose names you can see etched into the roof lead.

During the conflict, military planes from four nations crashed on the Highclere Estate whilst on active service.
