BASINGSTOKE and Deane Borough council has allocated funding to support residents with changes that may affect them following Brexit.

The borough council has partnered up with Citizens Advice Basingstoke and Tadley will be providing a new service to support residents in the borough affected by changes as a result of Brexit.

As a result, £21,400 has been allocated by the borough council to support this new service.

European citizens living in the UK are required to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to continue living in the UK after 30 June 2021, with an estimated 7,000 people currently living in the borough eligible to apply to the scheme.

Other support the charity will provide includes guidance on employment rights and EU employees’ rights to stay, UK citizens living overseas and looking to return and consumer concerns such as travel insurance.

Leader of the borough council, Councillor Ken Rhatigan said: “We understand this is an uncertain time for residents and businesses in the borough and, as a council, we have taken a proactive approach to ensure we are on hand to support those affected.

“Some residents may need additional support to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme and speak to someone about other concerns they may have, and this funding will support Citizens Advice to provide this valuable service.”

The new service forms part of the borough council’s preparation work, alongside its partners, to look at the potential impacts and opportunities that Brexit may bring and ensure residents and businesses are prepared.

Graham Hatcher, from Citizens Advice Basingstoke and Tadley added: “Settled status is just one of many Brexit enquiries residents will be asking Citizens Advice for help.

“As a local charity funding is challenging so we are very grateful for this additional support. It will cover the additional costs for the work required to help our local community.”
