PLANS to bring a new retirement living facility to Tadley is set to take a step closer.

Councillors on Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s development control committee meeting have been recommended to approved an application which would see a new retirement living complex consisting of 42 apartments.

The site in New Road, Tadley, will also have a new retail store constructed for the perspective residence of the planned facility.

If given the green light, the applicant will demolish the current Reading Warehouse site to make way for the living complex and associated parking spaces.

In the planning design statement, it reads: “The proposal involves the demolition of the existing buildings and the erection of retirement apartments aimed at the over 60s who are seeking to downsize and who wish to benefit from a safe, secure environment with like-minded people.

“The proposal would provide a total of 30 car parking spaces for use by residents and their visitors.”

The statement continues: “The development would provide the opportunity for a high quality residential development that would positively contribute to meeting a local housing need for older people.

“It represents a sustainable development, with wide ranging social and planning benefits, both for potential residents and the community as a whole.”

Residents in the surrounding area also seem to be in support of the proposed plans adding it would be a ‘welcome addition to the community’.

Louie Venables, of Stanfield Road, said: “I write in full support of this application, The retirement homes will add a much needed facility in Tadley, the plans for this development look really good and well thought out.

However, other residents were in support of the retirement complex but not the retail arm of the application.

Susan Poole, of Church Road, Pamber Heath added: “I am for retirement homes but do not won’t another retail convenience store with a very good one just across the road that have served that part of Tadley well for many years and this new shop could put a local family out of business do not need twigs shops so close to each other.”

A decision is due to be made by councillors on Wednesday evening.
